Do you ever wonder:
“What is the meaning of life and why are we here?”
Well, having a living, personal relationship with Jesus is what life is all about! I hope the following explanation is helpful …
Who is Jesus?
In addition to the Bible, historians of the time record that he lived (e.g. the Romans Tacitus & Suetonius and the Jewish Josephus), but it is the New Testament of the Bible where you can learn most about who Jesus was and what he did.
We know that he was human; he experienced hunger, tiredness, sadness, love, and he worked with his hands as a carpenter, and was even tempted, as we are.
But was he more than just a man, as Christians believe? Jesus himself said that he was the Son of God and also claimed to be the same as God (in the Bible, John chapter 14, verse 9 Jesus says that if anyone has seen Jesus they have actually seen God!)
And, he even forgave people their sins; this was something that only God could do.
Jesus performed many miracles
He healed hundreds of people, from those born blind or crippled, to those with leprosy or fever, to a woman who had “bled” for 12 years and a man who had a shriveled hand. (Check out the first four books of the New Testament) He even raised the dead. This happened on more than one occasion, but the most amazing was his friend Lazarus who had been dead four days. Only the power of God can do such things
So he did great things and made many claims
Does that mean they were true?
Proof of who Jesus was comes from a source 700 years before he was born. God gave prophecies to prominent people in Israel about a Messiah (Saviour), who would come in the future, who would turn the people back to God: “He would be born in Bethlehem; he would be born to a virgin and he would eventually die to save us from our sins.”
Even before these things were said about Jesus, God told King David (1000 years before Jesus) that the Saviour would have his hands and feet pierced. This was how Jesus was crucified, but this method of execution was unknown in David’s day!
What has that got to do with me? Well, if Jesus died and is still dead, buried somewhere, then the answer is “nothing”.
But, Jesus did not stay dead; he rose from his stone tomb three days later and is alive today, in heaven. This should not be surprising, since Jesus had earlier raised a man from the dead, after four days!
When God made the world it was perfect, but man decided to “go it alone” and try to get by without God. Because of this, sin polluted what God had made and we could no longer have a relationship with a perfect God.
Only Jesus, who was perfect, could remove the barrier that mankind had erected and open up the way for us to once again know our heavenly Father. Jesus chose to die on a cross to pay the price for your sin and mine.
What should I do?
If you choose to accept what Jesus did for you, then you can regain the personal relationship with God that he intended you to have. And when you die you will inherit eternal life.
If this is something you want (and you really believe what Jesus did for you) then here are three things for you to say to God (a prayer):
Say sorry for all the wrong things you have done in your life.
God knows everything about you so be honest and specific.
Ask him to forgive you and ask him to help you not to do them again.
Say thank you to Jesus for dieing on the cross, so you could be forgiven.
Say thank you that because of what Jesus did you can now have eternal life with him.
Ask God to come into your life to help you live a life pleasing to him.
Well if you prayed that prayer, either tell someone that you know who is a committed Christian or contact me. I would love to chat with you or point you in the direction of an Alpha Course, which is a Practical Introduction to the Christian Faith. Thousands of these are running in countries across the world.
Find a Bible and read one of the first four books of the New Testament (Matthew, Mark, Luke or John), which tell you all about who Jesus is and what he did. Alternatively contact me and I can send you a free booklet that will help. You can also read My Story, to find out how I found Jesus to be real.
My prayer for you is that you will find out for yourself the joy of knowing God, personally, and have a relationship with him that is more fulfilling than anything you have ever experienced!
